Judith Chapman Interview: Tips on going Green!
Like one of our favorite daytime actresses, Soaps.com has an interest in going ‘green’. If you’re looking for more tips on how to help our environment, we invite you to read tips from one of your fave soap actresses, Judith Chapman.
Soaps.com: Tell me about Southern Green.
Judith: That’s a site that I’ve been a part of for about a year and a half now. You know, now it is ‘hip’ to be green. For 20 years I have been saying that until we elect a president that is willing to think green, alternative energy, we are in a heap of trouble. Look at us now. We are in a heap of trouble!
Soaps.com: You called it!
Judith: I called it 20 years ago, but I’m not the only one. I can’t take all the credit for it. So, about a year and a half ago I started this site with a dear, dear family friend (also from Greenville where you are) and she set it up for me. The site is all about asking fans to go to the site and keep adding to it. Any itsy bitsy little tips that they can use to help the planet and heal the planet. One of the things (going back to the beauty question) you know, we go out and buy all of these expensive scrubs that come in lots of plastic and packaging. There is something else that works so well and is environmentally friendly. Instead of using an expensive scrub from some beauty salon, use coffee grounds. I have an espresso machine, so I use espresso, but do it over the sink. Add warm water to your face, take the coffee grounds and scrub your face gently. Coffee beans actually have a great deal of oil in them, so it is a wonderful scrub and also a moisturizer. Gee, no packaging, just do it over the sink, it’s biodegradable and it washes away. So, the next time you are at your favorite coffee house, ask them to get those grounds to go! Take them home, do it over the sink though, don’t do it in the bathroom. I do it all the time. I stand over the sink and rub coffee grounds into my face. There you go. You’ve eliminated plastic, you’ve eliminated paper packaging and you have eliminated expensive costs! I mean, come on! You’re already having the coffee, so you are immediately recycling!
Soaps.com: That is a wonderful idea and I’m sure that many readers will love to save that money and still keep their skin healthy!
Judith: I encourage people to go to the site and continue to write me and let me know what little things that we can do, and I have really gotten some wonderful ones! One gal said that she keeps a bucket in the bathroom and uses it to capture the cool water at the beginning of the shower while it gets warmed up. She then takes that bucket of water and uses it to water her house plants.
Soaps.com: How smart!
Judith: Yes! Just think of how much water is wasted each day by waiting for showers to warm up! We’ve got to keep the ideas coming because it is the way of the future. Putting in plants that are environmentally friendly to your region is another. Whatever we can do to help, we should do. You know, at home (Palm Springs) we have a water purifier, but in Los Angeles I was still lugging these big 2.5 gallon plastic bottles around. So, I finally just put a water purifier in my little house in LA. I don’t mind lifting the plastic, and even though it is recycled, I am not adding to the problem! Whatever you can do to help, it does make a difference! If you want purer water or don’t like the tap, then get a Brita or whatever the products are, but not the bottles! Obviously, I get on a roll with this topic because I feel so strongly about it!
Soaps.com: That’s great, and hopefully it will encourage some of your fans to take action as well. Your attitude around this is certainly contagious!
Judith: I Drive a Prius (a fuel efficient car). I am always amazed when people gun their engines. If they had a little gauge, they’d see how much gas they use when they do that! So, slow down, be a little easier on the pedal and you won’t have to go to the gas pump so often! We are so rich in this country; we have such a surplus of everything that the idea of limiting ourselves is so foreign to us. But now, with everything that is going on, economic climate (and I think that Obama will be addressing this tomorrow), it’s not asking for sacrifice, but just asking for a little less waste! Again, I feel very passionately about this subject! Now Shannon, aren’t you glad you got me started?
Soaps.com: I am! I hope that your fans will be inspired to join you when they read how deeply you care about this.
Judith: I feel so strongly about this. We have got to go to wind and solar power. We’ve got to start bundling up, wearing an extra sweater, putting on socks if it’s a little chilly out instead of cranking the heat up or cranking the air conditioner up in the summer. Plus, it will save a lot of money!
Soaps.com: I bet you are so excited to have the week off and able to be home, aren’t you?
Judith: Oh Yes! I had to cook last night since James was gone all day yesterday. I love to cook and I love staying at home. Being in LA so much of the time, being away from James, being away from my dogs, I really like to come home and stay home!
Soaps.com: How many dogs do you have?
Judith: We just lost one a short time ago. So, we are down to one, but are already looking at getting another one.
Soaps.com: What kind of dog do you have?
Judith: The surviving one is a pound pup. As I say, a very grateful dog. She is a Shar-Pei / Pit Bull mix… adorable and precocious!
Soaps.com: I just rescued a Pit Bull about 3 months ago and she is wonderful, and I never thought I would have a Pit Bull!
Judith: You know, It is so unfortunate that (what’s his name) Vick and others do those things.
Soaps.com: I’ve always said, it’s the owner, it’s not the dog!
Judith: It is! It is the owner, not the dog! Little Pup is just as sweet and loving as can be! (Laughter….) Little Pup! She ain’t little and she ain’t a pup!
Soaps.com: (Laughter….) Seriously, is that her name?
Judith: (Laughter…) Little Pup!
Soaps.com: That’s her name? (Laughter….)
Judith: (Laughter…) That’s her name! (Laughter…) She was this tiny little thing at the pound. All of the other dogs were loud and barking, and she was just so quiet. I held her in my arms and said “Little Pup!” So yeah, Little Pup. We just lost our Sheppard so, just Little Pup for right now.
Soaps.com: She needs a companion.
Judith: Yes, she needs a new play pal.
Soaps.com: Judith, thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me during your much deserved week off! I am sure that our readers will be thrilled to read this.
Judith: Thank you! I will be seeing you at the Emmy’s again this year I assume?
Soaps.com: I certainly hope so! I’m not sure what the final decision is on the location, but I read that they may be in New York this year.
Judith: I would love it! The first year I was on the show they were in NYC and I had a blast!
Soaps.com: Either way, I’m sure that we will be there.
Judith: Take care Shannon and Happy New Year to you. Have a happy, healthy, prosperous, GREEN…. New Year! See you at the Soapnet party!
