General Hospital Actor Ward Costello Passes Away.


Television veteran Ward Costello passed away in Redlands, California on June 4 following from complications related to a stroke. The actor was eighty-nine years old.

During his lengthy career, Ward was best known for roles on “The Streets of San Francisco,” (as Capt. Roy Devitt from 1976-1977) “Barnaby Jones,” (as Charles Markwell from 1976-1978) and “Firefox,” where he played General Rogers in 1982. He also had a substantial career in the soaps, appearing on “The Secret Storm” (as Peter Ames from 1964 – 1966), “Edge of Night” (as Jack Berman) and General Hospital (as Senator Martin Drake from 1981 – 1989).  He was also a composer and wrote the lyrics to the theme for the James Cagney film, “The Gallant Hours.”

In addition to his acting career, the Boston native also served in the British Royal Air Force and the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII and was awarded five medals for his service. Following the war, he worked as a foreign news editor for CBS and a writer for newspapers and magazines before going on to study at Yale School of Drama, as well as the prestigious Old Vic and University of Birmingham in England.
