Days Of Our Lives: Cast Interviews From The Paley Center.
The Paley Center hosted “An Evening With Days Of Our Lives” on Wednesday May 9. The event featured stars from the show like Deidre Hall (Marlena Evans), Arianne Zucker (Nicole Walker), Chandler Massey (Will Horton), Bryan Dattilo (Lucas Horton), Lauren Koslow (Kate Roberts), Lisa Rinna (Billie Reed) and Galen Gering (Rafe Hernandez). Alison Sweeney (Sami Brady Hernandez) was on hand to host the event.
Over the years, Hall has been travelling a lot and talking to fans all over the country. They’re there when you’re nursing your first child, when you lose somebody you love, when you get old and nobody comes to the door, and when you’re in a nursing home and haven’t seen anyone come by. She is confident that there’s still a huge place for Daytime in this country and she thinks soaps will be on for a long time.
As the question period got under way, a fan told the panel that she was grateful and excited to be there. Her heart was pounding. She spends every single day on Soaps.com and has been watching for 47 years. An avid EJami, she asked Sweeney to comment on the story and where it’s headed. Alison answers that it’s hard to comment on that but she’s lucky to be able to work with Galen Gering, Bryan Dattilo, and James Scott. Arianne Zucker backed her up, agreeing that discussing the fanbases can be a slippery slope. However, she never takes offense when a fan wants Bricole, EJole or Rafe with Nicole.
When discussing recent work on the show, Alison Sweeney started talking about one of her favorite recent scenes. It was when Kate walked in on her kissing Lucas. Lauren Koslow had wondered how she should play that scene and loved how it spoke to the history of the show. “It was so much fun,” she commented. This quickly turned into a discussion of the cat fights the women share. “The fans just love those cat fights,” Sweeney laughed. Zucker, who has shared plenty of cat fights with her, chimed in to ask how many Sole (Sami and Nicole) fans are out there. “Still waiting for the Sole storyline,” she said. “They keep us apart for good reason. Physically Ali and I will go in a cat fight like, ‘Are you ready girl?’ If you pull a chunk out of my hair I will bring it,” Zucker said. They’ve always had a huge trust in their fights which makes it fun for them.
The topic turned to children as Sweeney and Dattilo discussed how weird it was to have a grown child on the show. In reality he should only be about 12. “What are you now, 21?” Dattilo joked to Massey. Sweeney asked Zucker how she feels about her current storyline now that she’s a mom. “I don’t even put my own personal life into the story because it’s not relevant,” she explained, pointing out how far soaps are from anything in life. She loves Nicole so much, but after playing her for 14 years she admits, “I just want her to make the right choices. But she doesn’t!”
In fact, most of the actors on the panel have been with the show for many years. Lisa Rinna joked that it’s been so long that returning to the show feels like a high school reunion, only everyone looks better. She even remembered watching Sweeney’s screen test. “I picked you, remember? I was like, she should get a part!” Zucker recalled her own screen test. It was with Jensen Ackles (ex-Eric Brady) and a lot of fun. She missed working with her real life husband, Kyle Lowder (ex-Brady Black) but also loves working with Eric Martsolf (Brady Black) and Valerie Wildman (Faye). She thinks her character needs a mother and some kind of guidance. Galen Gering quipped, “Sorry about that.” There was laughter all around. “How about Pookie – my dog?” she asked.
Sweeney added her voice to the discussion, saying that Sami needs her twin brother again. “She definitely needs someone to smack her up,” she said. This quickly turned into musing on all of the past actors that they miss. Hall missed Wayne Northrop, “And I still see him and he’s fabulous.” Koslow misses Jay Kenneth Johnson (ex-Philip Kiriakis). Alfonso gave a list: “Jason Cook, Renee Jones. There’s so many people, but I wouldn’t mind seeing Jason come back.” For Massey, “Patrick Muldoon (Austin Reed) probably for me. I’ve never met such a nice guy.” Rinna agreed, saying that Muldoon was one of the main reasons she returned to the show. Meanwhile, Dattilo put on a British accent and joked, “Thaao (ex-Tony DiMera). I’m a Thaao fan.”
